Working Reboatly – 4 year comparison
Four years ago was the first time that I had ever actually worked from the boat. We were on our Trophy 2802 in slip across the dock from where we are today. We had traveled to Maple Bay on Vancouver Island where Marcia was showing Saffy in a dog show. I was on the boat and received a phone call form a client telling me that something was not behaving correctly on one of their SQL Servers. I had my laptop and set it on top of our cooler on the back deck using my phone as a wifi hotspot. I was barely able to VPN in, but I was able to solve the problem. I think that I had less than 1mb per second speed at that time roaming on my cell phone.
Now 4 years later we are back at the same location, on the other side of the dock, a bigger boat, and real ability to work reboatly.
Having a table on board that I can use as a desk is only part of the improvement. The other improvement is the connectivity.
At least 150 times faster today than 4 years ago, with Starlink I am able to work from the boat as well as I could at home. Here are the speeds that I am seeing with Starlink right now at Maple Bay. Also, we have the backup internet with a MOFI router.
