The Office This Week
He is a short video of my office this week, while underway in Canada near Galiano Island.
Here is our route for the last 8 days. We have travelled about 157 miles on this trip so far, and it is about another 35 miles to get home tomorrow.
With 2 internet connections on board, Starlink and T-Mobile with the MOFI access point, we have been pretty well covered this week. The T-Mobile service does roam into Canada at no extra charge. Note, the Starlink plan is the standard plan with portability added.
Here are some pro’s and con’s of the two.
Starlink | Price $135 per month. |
Pro | Con |
High speed, great connection when not moving. | Not allowed to use when moving, underway |
Works anywhere on the same continent as billing address. | Cuts in and out when on anchor if the boat is blowing around or spinning with the currents. |
T-Mobile with the MOFI router | Price $50 per month |
Pro | Con |
Medium speed. Good enough to work when the signal is strong. | Does not work well in remote locations or sheltered bays with no cell tower nearby |
Works well while moving, if within range of a cell tower |
For my specific needs, it is not a choice between the Starlink and a cellular based router. I need both of them. For instance while we were underway, moments after shooting the video above, I was able to help a client with a database question while underway.
